One Tree Per Resident Project

Westmorland and Furness Council has announced the One Tree per Resident project, an ambitious initiative aimed at planting 250,000 trees over the next five years—one for every resident in the community. This project reflects the council's commitment to addressing climate change and biodiversity loss while fostering healthier, greener spaces for all.

The power of trees

Did you know there are more than 3 trillion trees on earth? That is 422 times as many trees as people. Trees have various benefits for climate and biodiversity, such as absorbing and storing carbon; providing shade and shelter; increasing biodiversity and enhancing landscapes; capturing air pollution and improving air quality; improving water quality; reducing soil erosion and reducing flooding risk.

A call for aspiring arborists

Westmorland and Furness Council has invited schools, parish council, community groups and landowner to participate in the initiative. As part of the scheme, a list of UK-wide tree planting grants have been detailed for other places to benefit from:

Funding opportunities for schools

  • The Woodland Trust, through their scheme to provide free trees to local schools
  • The Tree Council, who are currently accepting applications for their Orchard for Schools grant

Funding opportunities for parish councils

  • Branching out Fund, offered by the Tree Council
  • UK Community Tree Planting Grants, provided by the International Tree Foundation
  • Woodland Creation Grants, from Raise: Cumbria Community Forest

Funding opportunities for community groups

  • Conservation Volunteers and the Woodland Trust both provide communities with free trees
  • The International Tree Foundation offers UK Community Tree Planting Grants.

Funding opportunities for landowners and managers

To further encourage participation, Westmorland and Furness Council has launched a Community Tree and Hedgerow Planting Fund with a total of £50,000 available for grants. This funding is open to schools, charities, parish councils, community groups, and other eligible organisations.

There have been 41,544 trees planted so far, representing 17% of the overall goal.
