Global insights for local actions
The recent COP28 summit in Dubai was the inspiration for the December Future Ready online meetup.
Hannah Wright from Liminal shared her reflections from attending the summit. She explained the implications of COP for UK local authorities and how collective local actions can have a national and global impact.
The media attention generated by COP was a specific example of how local authorities can capitalise on such events. Hannah explained her experience of doing this and the tools that she uses to highlight the great work done at the local level. Read Hannah’s blog ‘From Global to Local’ here.
The second invited speaker also provided a concrete example of citizen engagement and climate action.
Dan Thompson from Running Out of Time explained how he is using long-distance, mass participation relays to highlight climate issues.
He detailed how he is working with local authorities along the route of a relay planned for June 2024 between Ben Nevis and Big Ben. His goal is to celebrate people, places, and projects that are doing great work on sustainability, net zero, and biodiversity.
Dan invited Futurenoughts to get in touch if they’d like to be part of the action: hello@running-out-of-time.com
Financing net zero
Hosted by Innovate UK and PwC, the team behind the finance guidance prepared for net zero projects explained how it can help you and your local partners to develop investment plans and routes to financing projects.
The bespoke session followed Innovate UK’s launch of its enhanced suite of support for local authorities to accelerate net zero investment and delivery.
The value of business cases
The importance of business cases was the focus of the January online meetup.
The discussion focused on the related value of business cases in project management, and how business case processes can be used to drive change in local authorities.
Experience and insights were shared by Jo Hobbs, Head of Corporate Strategy at Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils. She reflected on her experience of working across stakeholders to gain buy-in for a business case and achieve common goals. This detailed learning from engaging with senior managers, elected members, and staff across two different organisations.
